Laser Marking Dictionary #1: Understanding MOPA, F-Theta Lens, and Frequency

When choosing a fiber laser marking machine, technical specification sheets are often packed with specialized terms. To help you evaluate equipment easily, here is a simple guide explaining three essential optical and technical terms.

1. MOPA Laser (Master Oscillator Power Amplifier)

  • What it is: An advanced fiber laser source that allows flexible adjustment of pulse duration (width).

  • Why it matters: Standard Q-switched lasers have fixed pulse widths. MOPA lasers let you fine-tune pulse duration and frequency independently. This capability enables high-contrast black marking on anodized aluminum, color marking on stainless steel, and precise processing on delicate plastics without burning the surface.

2. F-Theta Lens (Field Lens / Scan Lens)

  • What it is: The optical focus lens located at the output end of the laser scan head.

  • Why it matters: Standard spherical lenses focus light onto a curved plane. An F-Theta lens creates a flat, uniform focal plane across the entire marking area ($110\times110\text{ mm}$, $200\times200\text{ mm}$, etc.). This ensures consistent laser focus, beam density, and line sharpness from the center to the outermost edges of your workpiece.

3. Pulse Frequency (kHz)

  • What it is: The number of laser energy pulses emitted per second, measured in kilohertz (kHz).

  • Why it matters: Frequency determines how laser pulses overlap on the material surface. Higher frequencies produce smoother, finer vector engravings and darker surface fills, while lower frequencies deliver higher single-pulse energy suitable for deep metal engraving or fast cleaning.
